Man in custody following standoff in Independence
INDEPENDENCE, Wis. — Authorities in Trempealeau County say a man who had threatened to shoot law enforcement officers was found hiding in a house after a standoff lasting several hours.
Sheriff’s officials said officers were called to a house in Independence about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The homeowner said a man with a gun was threatening to use it against law enforcement.
Tactical officers arrived, nearby homes were evacuated and negotiators spent several hours trying to talk the man into surrendering. Officers deployed “chemical agents” into the house and eventually went in after the suspect. He was found hiding in a crawlspace. Officers again used chemicals to get the man out of the crawlspace and he surrendered.
He’s being held at the Trempealeau County Jail.
