Man gets life in prison for killing father with hammer
A Beloit man was sentenced to life in prison for killing his father with a hammer last year.
Peter Hemmy pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide in February after being found competent to stand trial.
Police said Hemmy walked into the Beloit police lobby around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 25 and said he committed a crime at his home. When police went to check it out, they found Bruce Hemmy, 58, dead.
Prosecutors said Hemmy used a hammer to kill his father, because his parents were moving, and he would have had no place to live.
A criminal complaint said Hemmy told an officer that he had killed his father by hitting him in the head “three or four times” with a hammer.
As part of his sentencing, Hemmy will be up for extended supervision after serving 40 years in prison.
