Man cited in theft of American flag
Officers say they found flag in man's backpack
MADISON, Wis. — A man was cited on suspicion of stealing an American flag from a downtown Madison building, even though he insisted to police he was only playing capture the flag.
Madison police said a woman noticed a “scruffy-looking” man lowering the flag off a pole outside the United States District Court on Henry Street just before 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She told police the man had stuffed the flag in a garbage bag.
Officers found Joseph Krueger, 52, in a nearby grocery store. Krueger pulled the flag from a backpack and told police he “was just funning … playing capture the flag.” Police said they smelled alcohol on Krueger’s breath.
Police said Krueger tried to convince officers he was with the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI. Police issued Krueger the theft citation and gave the flag back to the building’s security officer.
