Man accuses 20-year-old of cutting in line at Toppers, suffers skull fracture

A man suffered a skull fracture in a fight over line cutting at Toppers Pizza in downtown Madison early Friday, police said.

Madison police said 20-year-old Aavante S. Clay, of Madison, was arrested on suspicion of substantial battery after a fight at the restaurant at 1368 Regent St.

Clay told officers the injured 21-year-old man accused him of budging in line at 2:05 a.m. inside Toppers and was yelling at him.

The two eventually ended up outside, where Clay punched the victim once, according to the report. Witnesses said the blow knocked out the 21-year-old, and he fell to the pavement and struck his head.

The suspect told officers he acted in self-defense, telling officers the victim had pushed him first. The man who suffered the skull injury did not have any immediate recall of the incident, police said.
