Mallards split double header with Loggers
The Madison Mallards tried to take both games of a day-night doubleheader with the La Crosse Loggers, but they couldn’t keep up with La Crosse batters in a 13-10 slugfest at the Duck Pond Monday night.
Despite the loss, many Mallard batters had big nights Monday. Cameron Frost paced the Mallards lineup, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a triple. J.J. Gould produced his second home run in back-to-back days, and Ro Coleman also got three base hits.
But the Loggers scored seven runs in the first three innings. The Mallards tried to keep up, scoring five before tacking on another run in the top of the fourth. Coleman drove home Gould on an RBI triple to the right centerfield gap.
But the Loggers scored another five runs in the top half of the sixth, courtesy of three hits and a Mallards error in the field. La Crosse scored another run in the top of the seventh. Madison scored four runs in the final two innings of the contest before seeing their comeback hopes fall short.
The Mallards started the day getting a 9-4 victory over the Loggers. Collin Theroux went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Grant Spranger got the win, allowing just one run across 5 2/3 innings in which he allowed just four hits, struck out two and walked a quartet of Loggers hitters.
Following the split, the Mallards head to a two-game road trip in Wisconsin Rapids. Game one of the two-game series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
