Rob Gard, the director of public relations for Destination Madison, said big events bring people to the city, and giving them the opportunity to see what Madison has to offer.
” When events the size of Am Fam come to Madison, it brings in thousands of people who are maybe experiencing Madison for the first time, ” Gard said. ” What’s exciting about that is that it spills over into some of the other things that we have to show off. ”
In return, these visitors are helping boost the economy by eating in the restaurants and shopping in the stores.
” Last year we had about $1.3 billion in visitor dollars, which is a huge economic impact for Dane County, ” Gard said.
The hope is that the visitors will want to come back to Madison again.
” So, when there are people here talking about how much they love Madison, that brings more people here, more spending, gives more local people jobs and it’s just an ongoing positive cycle for the city, ” Gard said.
The American Family Insurance Championship also gives directly back to charities, including the American Family Children’s Hospital.
” This is the fourth year of the tournament and, since its inception, we have received $2.4 million for American Family Children’s Hospital, which helps us, help our families, ” Nancy Francisco-Welke, the vice president of development for American Family Children’s Hospital said.
The championship will last till Sunday.
