Madison police welcome 6th horse to mounted patrol unit
MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department has added a new hoofed officer to its ranks.
The department’s newest police horse, Leo, is currently in training and has already worked large events like the Mifflin Street Block Party and the Midwest Horse Fair, police spokesperson Joel DeSpain said.
The 9-year-old Percheron Clydesdale is just over 17 hands– or 69 inches– high and weighs in at 1,650 pounds. He was donated by the Stockwell family from Postville, Wisconsin, DeSpain said.
The department is holding an open house for the public to meet Leo and the other horses on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Horse First Farm, 5594 Alpine Road, Brooklyn.
