Madison police link hit-and-runs to suspected drunk driver

A Madison man is arrested after police said they suspected him of being involved in two hit-and-run crashes as a result of intoxicated driving.

A police officer reported seeing a truck in the 200 block of East Lakeside Street around 5:10 p.m. Thursday matching the description of a truck involved in a north side hit-and-run case case from earlier in the day. A citizen then told the officer the truck had just been involved in a hit-and-run crash on John Nolan Drive. The victim in the crash reported a tire on the suspect vehicle was flat after the crash.

The suspect vehicle was spotted by another officer 20 minutes later at the home of Kevin S. Popovich, 45, according to police.

Police said Popovich’s explanation for his flat tire was not supported by independent witnesses to the crash.

Popovich refused a field sobriety test, refused to be put into handcuffs and struggled with officers, according to police.

Popovich was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and resisting an officer.
