Madison Memorial beats Middleton in first Game of the Week
Both teams ranked in the top 5 statewide
MADISON, Wis. — WISC-TV’s first Game of the Week didn’t disappoint Thursday.
No. 5 Madison Memorial held off a late charge to beat no. 4 Middleton in the first big 8 conference game of the year for both boys basketball teams.
Memorial guard Billy Wilson made two free throws with 7 seconds left to put the Spartans up 3. Middleton tried to tie the game at the buzzer, but Storm Murphy’s three-pointer just missed.
Memorial coach Steve Collins said the game was a heck of a way to start off the season.
“That’s a great first effort,” said Collins. “When you have a score that’s 56-53, both teams like that, in a first game of the season kind of performance, it’s unbelievable. That’s like a March- that’s like a tournament game. It felt like a tournament game.”
Chris Knight led the Spartans with 16 points, and Jake Ferguson scored 11. Murphy led the way with 15 points for Middleton.
