Madison man lost $3K to scammer named ‘Hook’
MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man lost $3,000 to a scammer who convinced him there was a warrant out for his arrest, according to a release from Madison police.
The 72-year-old man was called by a man who called himself Jeffery Hook from the sheriff’s department. He told the man he needed to send money via Walmart MoneyGram to avoid going to jail.
Hook told the man he had been sent a subpoena to appear in U.S. Federal Court and he failed to appear, which prompted a warrant for his arrest.
After making several transactions, the victim contacted Madison police.
