We’re celebrating what makes Madison “Very Asian”
From July 3-8, we’re putting a spotlight on Madison’s Asian community during the inaugural Very Asian Week, presented by Madison Magazine and Very Asian Foundation. There are two parts to the week:
Michelle Li, an award-winning, veteran journalist, was inspired to co-found Very Asian Foundation after she received a racist voicemail about one of her news segments. Li’s response to a racist voicemail became a global movement of unity and caught the attention of “The Ellen Show.” Li co-launched the foundation in January 2022 alongside friend and fellow journalist Gia Vang, using Ellen’s monetary gift of $15,000 as seed money. The nonprofit shines a light on Asian life through advocacy and celebration. Not only has Very Asian Foundation raised tens of thousands of dollars for AANHPI nonprofits in its first 100 days, it is also launching a national awareness campaign called The May Book Project.
Li reached out to Madison Magazine to help launch Madison’s Very Asian Week, which will use the funds raised throughout the week to provide access to Asian American youth literature in libraries in Wisconsin, since there is no mandatory curriculum. American Family Institute, which is the venue host for the panel discussion, will offer a matching incentive for proceeds from Very Asian Week.
