Directly south of Madison on the Dane/Rock county line, the village of Brooklyn is one of the best cycling destinations that doesn’t get the love it should.
Scenic low-traffic roads with a mix of hills and flats make for some super riding, especially early in the season before venturing into the “mountains” in western Dane County.
Maybe start your ride by taking Lalor Road, another designated Rustic Road, toward the village of Oregon, then continue south on Sand Hill, Sunrise and Oak Ridge before heading west on Old Stone Road. Take care crossing U.S. Highway 14 as you head the final miles into Brooklyn on Rome Corners and oak-tree-lined Windmill Road.
On the way back, take Bell Brook to Tipperary Road, which features two nice climbs past some eroded sandstone rock outcroppings. Tipperary is a classic, one of my favorite roads anywhere.
Eventually you can head west and hook up with the Badger Trail for the easiest route back to town. Depending on how hard you ride on the way down, the flat paved trail can be a leg saver.
The Legion Park in Brooklyn has bathrooms and water.
