Lane's Bakery & Coffee celebrates 65 years

Community bakery withstands the test of time

It’s no small feat to keep a business running for 65 years, let alone keep it family-owned and community-oriented the entire time. Lane's Bakery & Coffee on South Park Street has done just that, and now celebrates a massive milestone.

This year marks the 65th year for Lane's, which offers cakes, donuts, kringle, coffee, cookies and more. Despite the proliferation of larger corporate-owned bakeries and grocery stores with built-in bakeries since Charles and Flay Lane opened their bakery in 1954, Lane’s has withstood the test of time. Becky Lane, who runs the bakery with her husband, Chuck (grandson to Charles and Flay Lane), says the customers are the reason the bakery has had so much success over the years.

“We’re a place where people make memories. We have people that come in and say, ‘You did my wedding cake 50 years ago,'” Becky Lane says. “We love to hear those stories ... because this is a happy place. It’s a place of celebration.”

To continue with that spirit of celebration, Lane’s is offering giveaways on Aug. 9 and 10. Grab a free cupcake, $6.50 for a dozen doughnuts, 65 cents for a cup of coffee and a spin of the prize wheel where you’ll have a chance to win clothing, a gift card or free food. On Saturday there will be a kringle eating contest where the first five people to sign up will race to be the first to eat an entire kringle. The prize? A free kringle every month for a year and a $50 gift card to Lane’s.

In a time when competition is stiff and it's a feat for a company of any size to run a successful business for more than half a century, this Madison staple continue to be a landmark for customers new and old.

“We want to thank the customers who have helped us get to 65 years,” Becky Lane says. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”
