Forequarter on Johnson Street set to close this September

New concept set to open this spring

James Beard semi-finalist Jonny Hunter announced Wednesday the closure of Forequarter, his restaurant on East Johnson Street.

In an Instagram post, Hunter says, "It is with a lot of mixed emotion that we have decided to close Forequarter restaurant with our last service being Sept. 21."

Forequarter, which opened seven years ago, is known for its seasonal menus and craft cocktails. The spot was named as one of the best Midwest restaurants by Eater, and Bon Appétit named it one of the top new restaurants when it first opened. Hunter also owns Underground Food Collective, which includes Underground Meats, The Heights, Underground Catering and Underground Butcher, in addition to Forequarter.

The post said the current incarnation is closing, but Hunter plans to reopen the location next spring with a new concept and repairs.

"It has been a joy to be part of the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood the past seven years, and we have really loved how much you have embraced us," Hunter wrote. "We really want to thank the staff at Forequarter, they have been the heart of the restaurant and our family and we are so proud to have worked with them. We want to especially recognize Mark Bystrom and Maggie Roovers who were the core of the restaurant for the last few years."

It is with a lot of mixed emotion that we have decided to close Forequarter restaurant with our last service being September 21st. Yes, Forequarter as its current incarnation is closing but we plan to reopen next spring with a new concept (as well as some much needed repairs.) It has been a joy to be part of the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood the past 7 years and we have really loved how much you have embraced us. We really want to thank the staff at Forequarter, they have been the heart of the restaurant and our family and we are so proud to have worked with them. We want to especially recognize Mark Bystrom and Maggie Roovers who were  the core of the restaurant for the last few years. Stay tuned for the next chapter.
