Sara and Juan Salgado are Madison parents with a passion for making wooden toys and climbing structures for kids. Their three young children inspired the business they started in 2020, The Birch Bunny. To keep things affordable, larger items are local pick-up only. They also create smaller, shippable toys, and you’ll find them at some local events, like the Madison Night Market. Thebirchbunny.com
Summer May Die, But These Won’t
Summer blooms might be waning, but these bouquets will last forever because they’re made out of felt. Talk about low maintenance. Jenny Krahl of Versal Goods makes adorable felt-based florals that are available on her website and at many local markets. All of the felt Krahl uses is wool-free, making her creations vegan. Under-The-Radar Breakfast Spot
This is the kind of breakfast place that only locals know about. (So let’s keep this just between us, yeah?) Taco Local opens for breakfast at 8 a.m. Tuesday-Friday (and 10 a.m. for brunch on weekends). The Willy Street spot’s menu features chilaquiles, a breakfast burrito, tacos, baked goods and a specialty coffee menu. Tacolocal.com
Up-And-Coming Artist
See Madison and other locales featured in photographs shot after dark and a few design pieces in street photographer and graphic designer Mitchell Tanis’s debut exhibit on Sept. 24. The collection will “walk the viewer through the feeling and emotions that come after the sun goes down.” The drop-in exhibition is from 5 to 9 p.m. at Common Wealth Gallery, 100 S. Baldwin St. Mitchtanis.com
Brush Be Gone
Local abstract artist and live painter Hanna Bruer doesn’t use a brush. “I prefer to be closer to the work than a paintbrush can get me,” Bruer says. “I guess I never really outgrew fingerpainting. I also use shop towels, scraping tools, ink pens and paint markers.” Some of Bruer’s work can be found at Farwell Gallery in McFarland, Lakeside St. Coffee House and elsewhere. Hannabruer.com
Farm (to Truck) to Table
Instead of stopping for hand-held eats, you’ll walk away from Bryant Family Farms’ mobile farmers’ market truck with something from its selection of 150 products, such as fresh eggs and ground turkey, sourced directly from the farm. This pastured poultry farm just outside Mineral Point is a regular at the Monona Farmers’ Market and the Westside Community Farmers’ Market. Bryantfamilyfarms.org
