These are still going strong

At last count, there are eight independent bookstores going strong in and around Madison. 

Arcadia Books
Long-time American Players Theatre play director James Bohnen opened Arcadia Books in Spring Green in 2011. It includes a popular café. 102 E. Jefferson St., Spring Green, 588-7638, readinutopia.com

A Room of One’s Own
A Room of One’s Own started out as a feminist bookstore in 1975 but has expanded to include books of general interest. 315 W. Gorham St., 257-7888, roomofonesown.com

Mystery to Me
Formerly Booked for Murder, Mystery to Me has a new name, new location and new owner. It specializes in mystery novels but also sells books of other genres. 1863 Monroe St., 283-9332, mysterytomebooks.com

Paul’s Bookstore
Paul’s is a used bookstore going strong since 1954. It has been at its current State Street location since the early 1960s. 670 State St., 257-2968, paulsbookstore.com

Browzer Bookshop

University Bookstore
Perhaps better known for selling textbooks and Bucky Badger apparel, University Bookstore still sells bestsellers and other new books at its Hilldale and State Street locations. 711 State St. and 454 N. Midvale Blvd. (Hilldale). Stores also in Janesville and Brookfield. 257-3784, uwbookstore.com

Avol’s Books
Avol’s was an out-of-print downtown bookstore in various locations and under a few owners since 1980. Frugal Muse
