Madison Fire Department to help cover shifts during funeral for Appleton firefighter
MADISON, Wis. — A group of Madison firefighters will be responding to calls in Appleton Monday, helping their colleagues in their time of mourning.
The Madison Fire Department is providing an engine and five firefighters to help staff Appleton Fire Station #1 while members of that department attend funeral services for Mitch Lundgaard, who died last week after being shot while responding to a medical emergency call.
The Madison firefighters will help cover 12 hours on Monday. A group of other firefighters from the department is also taking a bus to Appleton to attend the funeral services.
Public visitation for Lundgaard is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday. A private funeral service will be held at 6 p.m.
There will be a funeral procession from the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel to the church.
Lundgaard is the first Appleton firefighter to die in the line of duty in 86 years.
