Man arrested on suspicion of theft, battery

A man was arrested on suspicion of substantial battery and theft after a couple was battered by a thief who took the woman’s wallet Saturday morning, according to Madison police.

A 33-year-old woman told police she set her purse down in the 5700 block of Balsam Road when a man took her wallet from the purse while pretending to tie his shoe. She said when she tried to get her wallet back she was punched and thrown to the ground.

Her 24-year-old boyfriend was struck in the head numerous times and knocked unconscious. He was treated and released from a hospital.

Police said Deandre E. Bell, 25, was located on Russett Road and some of the woman’s property was found in his wallet.
