MADISON, Wis. — Family and coworkers are remembering the Madison man who died while hiking in Aspen earlier this week as kind and adventurous.

Kelly McDermott was reported missing after he never returned from a climb of Capitol Peak in Aspen, Colorado on Sunday. A search helicopter found his body on Wednesday.

McDermott was a respiratory therapist working at UW Health since 2015.

“We are saddened to hear about his death and send our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family,” UW Health said in a statement to News 3 Now.

Family members remembered him as kind, adventurous, artistic, smart and funny.

“Kelly was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever known,” his aunt Jennifer Crowe told News 3 Now.

Authorities say McDermott was found in a precarious spot about 500 feet below a ridge that leads to the final climb to the mountain’s summit. The location is making it difficult for recovery teams to get to his body. Three people were hurt yesterday when they were hit by falling rocks while trying to get to the location.
