Lorraine (Duckert) Imhoff
MONONA-Lorraine (Duckert) Imhoff, whose long career as a registered nurse included many years at both University Hospital and Oscar Mayer, died on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013. She was 89. Lorraine was born on Jan. 24, 1924, in Cottage Grove, the daughter of Harold and Mabel Duckert.
She attended East High School where she played trombone in the marching band and served as senior class secretary in 1941. After completing nurse’s training at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, she worked for 20 years in orthopedics at University Hospital and 20 more years in the First Aid department at Oscar Mayer.
In 1942, Lorraine met John Imhoff of Madison. They married in December of 1944, and enjoyed nearly 69 years of marriage. Their close and loving relationship sustained and strengthened them. Lorraine and John had seven children and their family activities included reading, camping, day trips to visit relatives, and many happy years at their cottage, Doxhaven, on the Wisconsin River.
After retiring, Lorraine enjoyed working crossword puzzles (in ink), reading mystery novels, keeping a journal, and exchanging letters with family members and friends. Her ability to turn out smart, funny, literate prose, always in one draft with elegant longhand, astonished some of her children.
Her poppy seed rolls and chocolate chip cookies were widely appreciated. She was a wonderful “Nonny” to her grandchildren who remember her reading stories to them, playing the organ, baking chocolate cookies and “teddy pies”, and loving them unconditionally. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her loving husband; brother, Miles (Bertha) Duckert of Sun Prairie; sister-in-law, Maureen Duckert; children, John of Seattle, Wash., Jerry (Rachael Boland) of Enfield, Conn., Bill (Pat) of Monona, Tim (Rachel Dietz) of St. Louis, Mo., Ed of Wichita, Kan., Theresa (Doug) Wagner of Madison, and Charles of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Mike and Joe (Sara Tekula) Imhoff, Laurel (Matt) Braverman, Dan Imhoff, Eric McDermott, Bee Cha, and Donna and Grace Wagner. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Ella and Henry Imhoff and Emma Braverman. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Audrey and Mary; and brothers, Dean and Douglas.
A funeral mass will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11:30 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013. Graveside services will be private. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday. Friends and family may gather in Marion Hall for fellowship following mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
