Longest-serving member of Madison School Board puts family first
Normally a family health decision, even by an elected official, would not warrant an editorial. But we were struck by the importance of such decisions and the message sent by Madison School Board member Ed Hughes this week.
Hughes, who finished first in his bid for re-election to his school board seat is ending his campaign after learning of the return of his wife’s cancer.
At nine years, Hughes is the longest-serving member of the board, and while we do not endorse candidates we don’t mind saying now we are fans of Hughes and have respected and appreciated his public service.
But Hughes was straight-forward and unequivocal: his place is with his wife Ann and his job is to savor their time together. How deeply human. How loving. And what a reminder of what’s important in life…and politics. Our very best wishes to Ed and Ann.
