Local teams battle in second round of HS football playoffs Friday
Middleton, Waunakee, Verona, Monona Grove all in big battles
MADISON, Wis. — Many local football programs try to take the next step toward the state football championships Friday.
WISC-TV will have highlights from six games Friday, including the battle between Madison La Follette and Middleton at Breitenbach Stadium.
Neither team expected to be here, as they were decided underdogs last week But Middleton scored an upset victory at Oconomowoc Friday, while La Follette stunned top seeded Sun Prairie on the road 40-13.
Verona is the other Big Eight team still alive. They go on the road to play Lake Geneva Badger after their win against Hartland Arrowhead Friday.
The undefeated Waunakee Warriors are trying to get back to the state championship for the first time in five years, but they will have to battle a Badger Conference rival in Monona Grove, who beat Waterford last Friday. And the undefeated Monroe Cheesemakers hope to keep their record clean when they play Fort Atkinson at home Friday.
In Division 4, Lodi’s path to the state championship goes through River Valley. Lodi beat Broadhead/Juda last week. In Division 5, Columbus will try and stay undefeated when they host Kenosha St. Joe.
And in a battle of southwest Wisconsin powerhouses, Darlington will host Fennimore to try and advance in Division 6.
