Local realtors to host school supply drive Aug. 1 to collect backpacks & more for homeless children

MADISON, Wis.– When you’re a kid, there’s nothing quite like the smell of a fresh, rubber eraser, the promise of a blank notebook, or the excitement of getting to pick out a brand-new backpack before the first day of school.

But this time of year is often stressful for parents who struggle to afford school supplies for their kids. According to Huntington Bank’s Backpack Index, parents spend an average of $600 each summer on clothes, supplies, and technology for their elementary school-age children.

This weekend, there’s a way you can help.

Sunday, August 1st, Eric and Brett Hansen of Hansen Home Team Real Estate are hosting a drive to collect backpacks and supplies to donate to The Road Home, a local non-profit that serves families who are experiencing homelessness.

The brothers are collecting backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and more outside their office in Verona.

Their goal? 100 backpacks.

But more than that, the Hansens hope new school supplies will give kids a boost of confidence.

“In our business, we have a platform to connect people,” Eric Hansen explained. “We want to use that platform to make a difference. And in a small way, this drive can help do that.”

If you would like to donate, the drive runs from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, August 1st at the Hansen’s office at 251 S. Main Street in Verona.
