GE Healthcare plant expediting respiratory equipment to China to help those with breathing problems

MADISON, Wis. — GE Healthcare plant in Madison is making life-saving equipment to send to China to assist in the treatment of those with Coronavirus.

Demand for the Madison-made R860 respiratory in China is up nearly 20 percent, according to GE Healthcare staff.

The machine breathes for patients who are unable to breathe on their own.

According to a press release GE Healthcare sent to News 3 Now, ” A recent study published in the medical journal Lancet indicated that 30 percent of the patients who were being treated for the Coronavirus in China developed acute respiratory distress syndrome.”

Company staff say they don’t expect to see the demand decline any time soon and that they are hiring 10 manufacturing associates to keep up with the demand.

The GE Healthcare plant in Madison also saw a demand spike during the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s, according to the release.
