LIST: Asian-owned businesses to support in and around Madison
The area is home to many businesses owned by members of the AAPI community.
Hate and prejudice against members of the Asian American Pacific Islander, or AAPI, community have risen with the onset and duration of the coronavirus pandemic, with the spa shootings in Georgia being the latest tragedy. On March 16, Robert Aaron Long opened fire in Atlanta, Georgia, shooting nine people.
Long killed Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, and Paul Andre Michels. Seven of these victims were women, and six of those women were of Asian descent. Click here for a list of fundraisers for the victims’ families and those affected. Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz is the only surviving victim from the Atlanta shooting, recovering from gunshot wounds to the forehead, lungs and stomach. His family’s fundraising page is here.
In a national report released by Stop AAPI Hate — a reporting center that tracks and responds to instances of violence, harassment, discrimination and more — 3,795 hate incidents against Asian Americans were reported between March 2020 and February 2021. This number only represents incidents that were actually reported.
Memorials, marches, vigils and commemorative events for the Atlanta victims and the AAPI community as a whole have taken place all over the country. Cries from similar rallies and protests in our own state echo the call for solutions. Last Thursday, the AAPI Coalition of Wisconsin hosted a rally outside the Milwaukee City Hall, where Rep. Francesca Hong condemned anti-Asian acts of violence.
“Anti-Asian hate is not new,” Hong wrote two days earlier in a public response statement to the Atlanta spa shootings. “To my fellow Asians and Asian Americans, I will fight for your right to live and exist every day of my life. This is an unspeakable tragedy and an unbearable pain.”
