Lillian Ula, age 98 of Blanchardville died on Saturday morning, December 1, 2012 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. She was born on December 10, 1913 in Perry Township, Dane County, Wisconsin to William & Stella (Helland) Kittleson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Perry Lutheran Church in Daleyville. She went to the Meadow View rural school and graduated from the Blanchardville High School in 1932. She was married on January 23, 1936 at the York Memorial Lutheran Church to James Erland Ula. They farmed in York township for 41 years. She was an active, longtime member of the York Memorial Lutheran Church and Women of the ELCA. Lillian and James organized the York Sunday School in 1947. James served as the Superintendent and Lillian taught for many years. She was active with the Junior Choir, the Senior Choir and loved music. After James died in a farming accident in 1977 she remained on the farm for three years, and then sold the farm to her grandson, Ron Gifford. She then moved to an apartment in Blanchardville. Lillian loved spending time with family and friends. She was great at cooking and baking, especially making lefse, and sharing Norwegian table prayers and phrases.
Lillian is survived by her daughter, Lois (Richard) Gifford of Blanchardville; three grandchildren, Kathy (Jeff) Johnsen of Darlington, Carol Gifford of Syracuse, NY, and Ron Gifford of Blanchardville; five great grandchildren, Jeremy Vangsness, Nicole (Andy) Kurth, Aaron Gifford, Ellie Gifford and Ashley Johnsen; three great-great grandchildren, Blake and Emily Vangsness and Dawson Kurth; her sister-in-law, Dora Kittleson of New Glarus; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, and four brothers, Truman, Stanley, Byron and Everett Kittleson.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the York Memorial Lutheran Church at the intersection of highways 78 and 39 in rural Blanchardville. Rev. Mark Gruner of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish will officiate. Burial will be in the York Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday afternoon, December 6, 2012 from 3:00 until 7:00 PM at the Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville.
