Charges: Florida couple packs cat in luggage

Airport security finds pet in Pennsylvania

A Florida couple is facing animal cruelty charges after Erie, Pennsylvania, airport security allegedly found a cat in their luggage, Erie Times-News reported.

The 6-month-old female cat, Slim, was found among clothes and other items as the owners prepared to fly from Erie to Tampa, Florida, on New Year's Day, Erie International Airport Police told the newspaper.

TSA officials spotted the pet during pre-flight inspections, and the couple traveled home without the pet, Erie Times-News reported.

“A poor decision made on the customers’ part,” said Ian Bogle, the airport's director of public safety and facilities.

Slim was turned over to the Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania, Bogle told the newspaper.

“Twenty-eight years I’ve been here. I’ve seen some unique things. I’ve been involved in plenty of unique things. This is a first,” Bogle said.

Airport police cited Olivia Sari and Nicholas M. Larrison, both 21 and of North Port, Florida, with a summary count of transporting animals in a cruel manner, Erie Times-News reported. The couple could face fines and other costs.
