Leta Rae Howerton

CRANDON-Leta Rae Howerton, age 60, left us on Monday, September 24, 2012, for eternal peace. Born in Crandon, WI on February 29, 1952 to Ambers (Ted) and Imogene Howerton. Leta fought a long, fierce battle of a genetic lung disorder that required a lung transplant. She was fortunate to receive a double lung transplant and gain sixteen months of “gifted life” thereafter. Unfortunately, rejection set in a

Survivors include her two children, Nicole Roberts (Charles) & John Ball, Jr. (Jen); and six grandchildren, Charles, Nathan, Kaylee, Jacob, John III, & Evelyn. She was the baby sister and good friend of Patricia (Pat) Knolle and a caring brother, Ambers (Van) Howerton (Barb). She has another brother, Arnold (Aaron) Howerton (Sandy). Nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins further survive her. Predeceased by parents, grandparents and brother-in-law, Norbert (Whitey) Knolle.

Leta’s favorite pastime was creating beautiful hand sewn quilts along with afghans, gardening and canning. Her canine pet and companion, Val, joined her in eternal life on September 25, 2012. Leta spent many weeks and months living with her niece, nephew and family (Deb & Steve Schenk) during her recuperations and endless appointments. Deb was her support person before, during and after the double lung transplant and the two had an incredible bond. Leta had “adopted” Imani Schenk as her seventh “grandchild” and Imani adored her. Leta was thankful for Pastor Vertein’s visits as well as Van & Barbs visits and gifts of food, clothing and material for her beautiful quilts. The family is appreciative for this as well.

Per Leta’s request, there will be no funeral service. A private affair will be held at a later date. Ryan Funeral Home of Madison is assisting the family. In lieu of memorials, Leta wished for others to become organ donors and help people like her.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thank you to the entire lung transplant team at UW-Hospitals in Madison for their endless knowledge, expertise, guidance and friendships during the past four years. Dr. Cornwell is absolutely amazing and certainly was respected by Leta…those involved are so grateful to him and the team of professionals there involved in Leta’s care…thank you so very much.
