Lawrence A. Roe, 96, of Madison died on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Oakwood Village West, Madison.

Private family memorial services will be Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Rev. Jeff Pedersen will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville.

Larry was born on February 15, 1916 in Cassville, Wisconsin the son of John C. and Arta Mae (Tharp) Roe. He graduated from Cassville High School, UW-Platteville, University of Missouri-Rolla, and University of Wisconsin, Madison. He had a BS and MS in Mining Engineering and an honorary degree from University of Missouri-Rolla. While attending UW-Platteville, his class designed and built the Platteville, “M” (mining) In his distinguished mining career he published over thirty technical papers, authored four books, holds four US Patents, and worked on every continent except Antarctica. He believed the mining industry could build productive, environmentally safe mines. As a boy growing up in Grant County he loved hiking, fishing and hunting. He purchased land near Cassville from 1947 to 1968 and now 244 acres are the Roe Preserve, part of the Mississippi Valley Conservancy.

Larry was united in marriage to Kathryn Nuernberg on October 12, 1941 at the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville, where they have been married for 71 years. To this union they had three children, Michael, Sharon and Gerald. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Madison; daughter, Sharon (Roger) Anderson of Eagan, MN; Gerald (Sarah) Roe of Bethlehem, PA; five grandchildren, Charles Roe, Caroline Roe, Timmothy Roe, Susan Roe and Colby Anderson, brother, Norman Roe. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael on March26, 2012. The family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
