Lawmaker to propose drug testing for high school

A Wisconsin Republican wants to require all high school students participating in extracurricular activities to be subject to random drug testing.

Rep. Joel Kleefisch’s proposal is one of several coming from a task force he convened looking at ways to combat heroin use. The proposal would also require random testing for students who park vehicles on school grounds, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Wednesday.

Wisconsin Association of School Boards lobbyist Dan Rossmiller says a handful of Wisconsin school districts have implemented similar policies, including schools in Arrowhead, Crivitz and De Pere.

Kleefisch acknowledged Tuesday at the heroin task force’s last meeting that the legislation would likely be “for lack of a better term, a tough pill to swallow” for some.
