Law enforcement increasing Hwy. 151 patrols
Authorities hope to curb speeding
GRANT COUNTY, Wis. — Speeding motorists are prompting an increasing number of law enforcement patrols along Highway 151, according to Grant County authorities.
The Wis. Department of Transportation sponsored a multi-jurisdictional traffic enforcement grant that focuses on Hwy. 151 between Iowa and Dodge counties.
Eight law enforcement agencies received funding for overtime enforcement, and the first deployment was held on June 3.
Police officers and sheriff’s deputies issued 380 citations along with 134 written warnings in four days. There were 239 speeding citations and 52 seatbelt violations.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of fatal and serious injury crashes in Wisconsin. The Wis. DOT reported there were more than 16,700 speed-related crashes on state roads in 2010.
Law enforcement agencies will continue to work these deployments throughout the summer. The next deployment is scheduled for July 20.
