La Fete de Marquette celebrates French heritage

La Fete de Marquette, a community festival held by the near east side’s Wil-Mar Neighborhood Association, is in its 11th year this weekend.

The event celebrates French heritage through its name, which, along with the Marquette neighborhood, derives from explorer Jacques Marquette.

“We have our roots in the French culture,” Beatrice Hadidian, program director of the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Association, said.

La Fete de Marquette featured expanded kids and family activities, a second stage, as well as a global array of food selections.

“We just wanted to bring something that was globally and world-renowned to our neighborhood,” Hadidian said. “La Fete De Marquette rhymes, it sounds good and it’s just a big summer party for everyone.”

The event continues through Sunday.
