L. Donald Stenbroten
Madison/L. Donald Stenbroten, age 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at his home in Madison.
Don was born May 24, 1937 to Olaf and Olga (Flattum) Stenbroten in Blanchardville. He graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1955 where he lettered in three sports. Don was married to Lila Conklin at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa on May 24, 1957. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and served for four years at a radar site on the Canadian border during the Cold War. He and Lila lived in Cut Bank, Montana during those four years.
Don was a small businessman and enjoyed the business world, owning several businesses during his lifetime. In 1965 he started GTC Auto Parts on Park Street in Madison with his brother, Olin. He sold that business and started C & T Parts Center on Stoughton Road. In 1988 he opened Pleasant View Place, an assisted living facility for the elderly (CBRF). With Lila, he also owned and operated two additional facilities; Swanton House in Madison and Fitchburg House in Fitchburg. In 1998 he built a home in Lake Havasu, AZ, where he and Lila spent the winter months. In 2000, a little bored with retirement, he built Interstate Storage facility in Poynette and Lake Wisconsin. Later he expanded to a facility in Madison.
Activities enjoyed by Don included golf, boating, river rafting in the western states, and traveling to Hawaii, Mexico and Aruba.
Don is survived by his wife, Lila; children, Randal of Madison, Gregg (Barb) of Lake Mills and Scott of New York; grandchildren, Michael and Matthew; and nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Olin; sister, Ruth Duerst; sister-in-law, Beatrice, and brother-in-law, Paul Duerst.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 7291 County Road PD, Verona, with Rev. Sheryl Erickson officiating. Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens.
