Kenosha schools won’t deduct union dues

Superintendent: Dues won't be deducted without employee's written authorization

Despite what the union says, the Kenosha Unified School District says it won’t automatically deduct union dues from teachers’ paychecks.

The Kenosha Education Association had announced that automatic dues deductions would begin Feb. 19.

But Interim Superintendent Joe Mangi tells the Kenosha News the district won’t deduct dues unless it receives written authorization from the employee.

Union executive director Joe Kiriaki contends the administration told the union to inform members that dues deductions and “fair share” payments for non-members would be coming.

Public employers are not allowed to automatically deduct union dues under Act 10, the 2011 law championed by Gov. Scott Walker that effectively did away with most union rights for teachers and other public workers.

In Kenosha, the school board approved new union contracts after a Dane County judge struck down Act 10.
