Karen Jean Wiganowsky passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018.

She was in the loving arms of her daughter, Victoria Wiganowsky, assisted by Sherry Dobe and joined by many friends, family and Agrace HospiceCare providers.

Karen was born on March 3, 1955, in Madison, to mother, Dorothy Wiganowsky (Hieman) and father, Edward Wiganowsky. She is survived by her daughter, Victoria Wiganowsky; brothers, David and Bruce Wiganowsky and many cousins, nieces, nephews and loved ones.

She graduated from Madison East High School in 1973 and completed two associate degrees at Madison Area Technical College. Karen retired from the Wis. Department of Health Services as an IT specialist. Her most recent tech achievement was mastering her first smart phone. She was an inquisitive woman whose favorite phrase soon became “OK Google.”

In that last year of retirement, Karen had a booming banner business. Her quality, handcrafted work brought color and joy to many birthdays, graduations and retirement celebrations. She was compensated heavily in laughs, cocktails, parties and most importantly, quality time with her daughter while doing what she loved. Her innovative creativity gave her a unique talent for making something beautiful or practical out of anything she could get her hands on.

Karen Wiganowsky was a strong woman who lived her life fully with, love, courage, beauty, laughter and playfulness. When diagnosed with a terminal illness in October 2016, her love of life and family gave her the will to fight. She enjoyed every day to the fullest. Her optimism, bravery and determination during her battle only grew. She always kept “the light in her eyes.”

Karen Wiganowsky requested to be cremated. Her ashes will be interred at the family plot in Medina Cemetery, Marshall, Wis. A Celebration of Life will be held on her birthday, Saturday, March 3, 2018. Details will be published prior to the event.

Special thanks to Cheryl, her compassionate CNA; Nicole, with Unity Home Health; the friends and family that showed unconditional love and support through this journey; the Agrace HospiceCare providers for their exceptional care; and her Oncology team, who gave the most cherished gift, Time.

Cards can be mailed to: 1901 Aberg Ave, Madison, WI 53704
