July Prep Mania Team of the Month: Sun Prairie baseball team
Sun Prairie captured sixth state title in June
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — When it came to baseball in the state this year, no one really matched the talent the Sun Prairie High School baseball team had from top to bottom.
Sun Prairie was the No. 1 ranked team from start to finish.
The Sun Prairie baseball team won its sixth state baseball title in June, capping off one of the most impressive seasons in recent memory. The team has been named the Prep Mania Team of the Month for July.
“We have talked about it, they are such a tight-knit group. They are a family and these eight seniors are really going to be missed,” said head coach Rob Hamilton.
Sun Prairie’s outstanding pitching, hitting and defense led the team to 31 wins and just one loss all year — an early season one-run loss. The Cardinals finished the season on a 27-game winning streak.
“We have a saying that we had a couple of years ago: ‘Winners are like biscuits.’ we rise to the occasion, and I think everyone on the team is a winner,” said catcher Zach Fairchild.
“As a team, we have been on a tear. I have never seen anything like it. We talked about the 26-0 2005 team and we went out and watched them play all season and they were put on pedestal in our heads and we wanted to beat that, and we came out and played the best we could and won 27 in a row,” said junior Tony Butler.
Their title run did not come without some anxious moments. They won a nine-inning thriller in state semi finals 4-3 over Stevens Point.
“They did really have this as a goal and it was very possible, only with their hard work,” said Hamilton.
“There’s no ‘I.’ It’s the whole team. Everyone works together and picks each other up and plays good baseball,” said Butler.
It’s that true team effort that this Cardinals team will be remembered for quite some time.
