Julep offers Southern comfort
A fresh face: Julep, joined by siblings Barolo wine bar and A-OK coffeehouse on East Wash, serves up comfort eats like this shrimp and grits dish (front) and a proper mint julep over crushed ice (back).

827 E. Washington Ave.

Southern cooking evolved in the home, where cooks took pride in both skill and creativity. Many cultures have contributed to what we appreciate as the genre today.

Julep showcases old standards from fried chicken and collard greens to buttermilk biscuits and skillet cornbread. However, nothing is old hat. Playful renditions of pimiento cheese with pecans and roasted onions, black-eyed pea salad and shrimp and grits are distinctively scrumptious. The bar boasts many bourbons and indeed concocts a proper mint julep, served over crushed ice in a silver tumbler. Stylish Julep shares a New Orleans-worthy courtyard with siblings Barolo wine bar and A-OK coffeehouse.
