Judge rules Telemark has been abandoned
Foreclosure fast-tracked at Telemark Lodge with judge's abandonment declaration
WASHBURN, Wis. — A judge in Bayfield County has ruled the historic Telemark Lodge and Resort has been abandoned. That could expedite foreclosure proceedings and possibly attract a new owner.
The lodge, built in 1972, is the starting point for the American Birkebeiner, an annual cross-country race that attracts skiers from around the world. In recent court hearings, it was revealed the lodge hasn’t had electricity or running water since March and there’s evidence of looting in the 150-room resort.
Mortgage holder Dick Short says the abandonment ruling means the title can be cleared of lien holders, which will be more attractive to potential buyers.
Wisconsin Public Radio News reported regardless of whether Telemark is sold, Short and Birkebeiner organizers have reached an agreement to use the 900-acre property and trails for next February’s race.
