Joyce E. Gussel, age 84, of Wisconsin Dells, passed away peacefully at home, with her loving husband by her side, on January 27, 2014.

Joyce Elaine Hansen was born August 11, 1929 to Russell and Catherine (Souther) Hansen in Mauston, Wisconsin where she was homecoming queen and salutatorian of the class of 1947. After graduating from Gradwohl School of Medical Technology in St. Louis, Joyce worked at the Mauston Hospital and later the Dells Clinic as a lab technician. In 1949 she married Bud Gussel, and together, starting in their garage, they began a small wholesale distributing company which has grown to become Holiday Wholesale. She loved being a full-time mother and homemaker, especially the idyllic summers spent at the cottage on Jordan Lake, and she volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother. Sunday afternoons at Skyline Ski Area led to weekends at Hurley, which became extended ski trips where she graced the slopes of Aspen and Steamboat Springs. Travels to Alaska and Hawaii, the Bahamas, Canada, Europe and Mexico, and winters spent at her beach home in Florida, generously shared with so many people, filled her life with wonderful moments and memories that her family will forever hold dear.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Bud, of Wisconsin Dells; four children, David (Julie) of Briggsville, Julie Keller of Baraboo, Joe (Pam) of Wisconsin Dells, and Gary (Jade) of Middleton; and nine well-loved grandchildren, Jordan (Megan) Keller, Courtney (Scott) Meyer, and Lauren, Tricia, Kevin, Caitlyn, Claire, Griffin, and Chandler Gussel. She is further survived by her brothers-in-law, Clark Winn, Harvey Christensen, and Bob (Barb) and Tom (Lisa) Gussel of Wisconsin Dells; step-siblings, Fr. Bede Jagoe of Chicago, Mary Modjeski of Cumberland, and Patrick (Elizabeth) Jagoe of Wisconsin Dells; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Francis Jagoe; three sisters-in-law, Roseanne Christensen, Beati Winn, Jean Hansen; and her brother, Richard Hansen.

Joyce’s whole life was her family, who loved her quick wit and great sense of humor, but she was known for her kindness, her friendliness, and her beautiful smile. We will miss her quiet but constant love and devotion. She was truly the wind beneath our wings.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at St. Cecelia’s Summer Chapel, 603 Oak Street in Wisconsin Dells. Further visitation will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Glacier Canyon Conference Center at the Wilderness Resort in Lake Delton from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at which time a memorial service will be held, Reverend Steven Keller officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Joyce’s name be made to the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
