Joseph Albert Shaffer
Joseph Shaffer, age 93 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin passed away peacefully Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the Barrington/Our House in Wisconsin Dells.
Private family services were held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Steven Miller officiating. Burial was at Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells. Joseph was born July 19, 1919 in New Lisbon, Wisconsin the son of Franklin and Anna (Rust) Shaffer. He served in the U.S. Army from May of 1941 and was honorably discharged in November of 1945 earning the American Defense Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War 2 Victory Medal, 1 Service Stripe and 6 Overseas Service Bars. In April of 1947 he married Shirley Wilhelmson in Monroe, Wisconsin. They had lived in LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Cedar Falls, Iowa; Monroe, Wisconsin and Little Falls, Minnesota before finally settling in Wisconsin Dells where they had resided for 32 years. He enjoyed a number of years camping and traveling in the winter to Arizona and Florida with his family. Joe will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Joe is survived by a son, Ronald (Diana) of Wisconsin Dells and daughters, Sherry (Edward) Lipsky of Greensboro, North Carolina; Debra (Larry) Jones of Beaufort, North Carolina and Candace (Michael) Weber of Green Bay, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; stepfather, Fred Haase, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
