John J Neeson
JANESVILLE– John J Neeson, 66, entered eternal rest early Saturday, September the 8th, 2012, after a two year battle with lung cancer. He was born November 7th, 1945 to Robert and Mary (Cochrane) Neeson. He grew up in Janesville and graduated from Janesville Senior High School in 1965. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force, where he was a Sergeant and proudly served two terms in Vietnam. Upon his return from Vietnam, he started working for the SS Kreske chain of stores (Jupiter,) which later changed to the K-mart Corporation. He worked for K-mart for nearly 39 years as an Assistant Manager and Operations Manager. He retired in October 2007 and went to work for the Deerfield School District in maintenance until he could no longer work due to his illness. He cherished the many close relationships he formed with the staff.
In 1970, he married his wife of 42 years, Phyllis, and together they raised 4 wonderful children. John loved going out in his boat fishing, camping, the many family trips to the cabin up north and he had a great love for watching movies with his good friend Ron Zabel. Most of all, he loved his children and grandchildren and the great family get-togethers at his home.
He is survived by his wife, and his family, Anna (Donnie) Fuller II from Edgerton, Cheryl (Marty) Hjerstedt of Wanatchee, WA, Bud Dabson of Janesville and Anthony (Missy) Neeson of Hammond, LA; his 8 grandchildren, Andrew (Angela) Holmes, Ryan (Arielle) Holmes, Travis Fuller, Tyler Fuller, Mia Fuller, Robert Fuller, Kayla (Jacob) Backhaus, Matthew Hjerstedt and 2 great-grandchildren: Isabelle and Isaiah Holmes. He is further survived by his sisters Mary (Jerry) Paulson of Madison, and Claudia (Buck) Williams, Rose (John) Donagan, Julie (Don) Parker and Patty Bernier all of Janesville; many nieces and nephews, his sister-in-law Carol (Gary) Gatrel of Janesville, brother-in-law Jim (Margie) Paul of Janesville, Ron Zabel of Janesville and Harlow Paul of Austin, TX. John is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert and his sister-in-law Susan Zabel.
He will be missed by his “adopted children” who called him Dad: Maria, Mike, Scott, Lisa and many life-long friends. He especially enjoyed the staff at Deerfield School and thanks them for all the love and support they showed him during his illness. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Dean Clinic and St. Mary’s Oncology and his Hospice Nurse, Heidi.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Janesville, with Pastor Cory Rajek officiating. Burial, with Full Military Honors, will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Janesville. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, Janesville.
