John E. Marling
John E. Marling, age 90, of Janesville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 21, 2012, at St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on May 23, 1922, in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, the son of William and Melba (Pengally) Marling. The family moved to Madison when John was two and lived there through his childhood. John attended University of Wisconsin, graduated from Dartmouth College and received a degree in Accounting. During WWII John served as First Lieutenant on a LCI landing craft in the Pacific theatre. In 1946, Mr. Marling joined Marling Lumber in Janesville as manager and retired in 1982. John was the third generation of the family business. Mr. Marling supported numerous community organizations and served on many local boards. Mr. Marling was proudest and received his life’s joy from his family.
He is survived by his 4 sons: John W. (Gretchen) Marling of Oregon, Douglas Marling and Kurt (Lorrie) Marling both of Janesville, and Paul (Susan) Marling of Georgia; 7 grandchildren: David (Nichole) Marling, Steven Marling, Greg (Tammy) Meyer, Andrea Meyer, Cheyene Marling, Brandon (Christine) Marling and Chris (Kristy) Marling; a brother, Bill Marling of Florida; many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Margaret.
A Celebration of his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, 54 S. Jackson St., Janesville, A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Burial will be held at the Forrest Hill Cemetery, Madison, WI. SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY is assisting the family with the arrangements.
