Joan Margaret Higley
LODI – Joan Margaret (Green) Higley, age 79, died on Friday, June 27th, at her daughter’s home in Lodi. As was her desire, Joan was able to remain in her Lake Wisconsin home, until the last weeks of her life.
Born January 12th, 1935 to William H and Bertha (Ball) Green of Newton Le Willows, UK. Joan is predeceased by; Parents and brother, William (Billy) Green; parents-in-law; her husband of 54 years, Merritt V Higley and son, Ian William. Joan is survived by; her daughter, Julie (Kasey) Thompson and two grandchildren; Wyatt & Sydni Thompson.
Joan worked at Divine Savior Hospital for many years. She was first a wife, mother and over the moon for her two grandchildren, who called her “Gram”.
Joan loved her house, particularly her patios and the stone fireplace she and Merritt built together. However, she never hesitated to say, “I married and moved to the U.S. but one foot shall always remain in England”. In 56 years, her accent never faded and she could be as feisty as she was kind. She loved her morning cup of tea and marmalade toast . Visitors often compared her home to a “british cottage”, with many flower gardens and english style decor. In her lifetime, Joan fostered and found homes for many abandoned animals, as well as feeding a menagerie of wildlife in her yard.
Special thanks to: John Bremner, friend and neighbor who kept an eye out for Mum and her closest friend of many years, Ruth Wilson, Natalie and Amy, of St Jude Hospice Care and Jeff, with Gunderson Funeral Home, who is assisting the family.
Joan wished for no funeral or memorial service, she simply wanted to be remembered as she was.
Donations to the Humane Society or Susan G Komen Foundation are appreciated.
