Jimmie N. Smelcer-Pace
Jimmie N. Smelcer Pace, age 84, of Dodgeville, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2012 at Bloomfield Healthcare & Rehab following a long illness.
Jimmie was born on May 17, 1928 in Council Bluffs, IA to Floyd and Violet (Wax) Pace. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Ethel and Otto Smelcer in the Richland Center area where he worked as a mechanic for Jones Chevrolet. His family moved to Avoca while he was in his mid-teens. Jimmie served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 until 1950. Jimmie then lived in California and finally settled in Reno, NV where worked as a mechanic and test driver for Bill Stremmett Porsche. He later worked in Carson City, NV as a mechanic in the casinos. Bill was married to Davey Carter and they had a daughter, Theresia Lee Pace. He later married Mary Anderson and she preceded him in death. Jimmie was an avid gardener and coached little league for many years. He was an accomplished guitarist and had played with Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, Ethel and Otto Smelcer; two infant sisters and a stepson, Andy Anderson. Jimmie is survived by his daughter, Terry Pace of Old Station, CA; a sister, Dona Ray of Dodgeville; a stepdaughter, Jean Taylor of Prescott, AZ; a stepson, Robert Anderson of Paradise, AZ; an aunt, Geneva Hollinger as well as nieces, nephews and friends.
Military graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Avoca Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Alzheimer’s Association would be greatly appreciated.
