Jerry Warden Jones
MADISON – Jerry Warden Jones, age 83, passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at Homestead Living in Waunakee.
Jerry was born on April 6, 1929, in Union Center, Wisconsin, to John and Faith (Warden) Jones. He graduated from Mauston High School in 1946, attended University of Wisconsin Extension in Mauston in 1947 and graduated from Juneau County Teachers College in 1948. Jerry met Jean Hartung who had graduated with a B.S. Degree from UW Platteville and was teaching in Mauston. They were married on July 2, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville.
Jerry earned his B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from UW – Milwaukee in 1958 and his M.S. Degree in Education with majors in Administration and Guidance from UW-Milwaukee in 1962. In following years, he earned 30 additional credits from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and Madison, as required for a school district administrator.
Jerry taught school from 1948-1955 in Union Center, Elroy and Wonewoc, and in Brookfield from 1956-1959. From 1959-1962, he worked at A C Electronics in Oak Creek as a coordinator for college graduate business administration and engineering training programs. From 1962-1966, he was an Elementary School Principal in Muskego-Norway Public Schools. Jerry was the Assistant Superintendent in the Greendale Public Schools from 1966 -1972 and the Superintendent of the Sauk Prairie Public Schools from 1972-1987. Following his retirement in 1987, he worked with CESA in Portage and later was an educational consultant for various school districts.
For many years Jerry and his family took 2 weeks of summer vacation to travel. They were able to visit all of the states and enjoy the sights and scenery of each. In earlier years, Jerry also enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends. He and Jean have played many card games including Bridge, 500, Euchre, and Sheepshead and have belonged to several card clubs. Bridge was their favorite game, learned from Jean’s parents. They have cherished the many lasting friendships made during their years in the Milwaukee area, Sauk Prairie, and in Madison where they have lived for the past 25 years. The focus of Jerry’s life has been his marriage, family and Catholic faith.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Jean; his two children, Jackie (Tom) Jedynak of Manhattan Beach, California and John (Diane) Jones of Woodbury, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Daniel and Michael Jedynak, Michael and Lauren Jones; brother Herb (Lorraine) Jones; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lincoln Hartford, Joan Hartung, Doris Grotkin, and Glenn Hartung; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Faith and John; stepmother, Ruby Jones; sisters, Jane Herriot Johns and Janice Hartford; and brothers-in-law, Ted Herriot, Clifford Johns, Paul Hartung and Courtland Grotkin.
Jerry’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the patient and caring staff at Homestead Living as well as the Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. Heartfelt gratitude is also expressed to friends and family for their support, including visits, cards, calls, and any other expressions of kindness during these past months.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Avenue, with Msgr. Charles Schluter presiding. Father Roger Nilles will concelebrate the mass. Burial will follow the mass at St Mary of the Lake Cemetery in Westport. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue. There will be an additional visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday.
