“We are very thankful for everything that happened on this day two years ago; for Jayme’s bravery and for Jeanne, Peter and Kristen for all being in the right place, at the right time and keeping Jayme safe,” Jennifer Naiberg Smith, Jayme’s Aunt and guardian wrote. “We’re still very thankful for the community, to the whole world for all caring and being there, and to law enforcement who worked tirelessly to seek justice.”

The post also shared an update on Closs, who is now 15-years-old.

“Jayme is doing good. We take life day by day,” Smith shared. “She is enjoying dance, school activities and many other things as much as is possible in regards to now dealing with the covid restrictions. She is surrounded by lots of loved ones.”

Closs was declared missing on Oct. 15, 2019 when sheriff’s deputies responding to a 911 call found the door to her family’s home near Barron kicked in and her parents, James and Denise Closs, shot dead inside. She was found in the town of Gordon, which is about 65 miles north of her home in Barron, on Jan. 10, 2019.

Jake Patterson was convicted of killing Closs’ parents and kidnapping her for months until her escape after pleading guilty to two counts of intentional homicide and one count of kidnapping in March of 2019.

Closs’ family also shared a special message in light of the anniversary: “We always want to say and remind others never take life for granted. You never know what tomorrow will bring. Always remember to take the time to tell your loved ones you love them.”
