Janesville school superintendent to retire at end of school year
JANESVILLE, Wis. — School District of Janesville Superintendent Steve Pophal is retiring at the end of the current school year, the district announced Wednesday morning.
Pophal has been the district’s administrator since 2017.
“I have been privileged to spend the past several years working in the Janesville schools, surrounded by a great team of colleagues,” Pophal said in a statement from the district. “We have accomplished so much over the years here, and when reflecting upon my career and my personal goals, now is the time to begin the transition into the next stage for me and my family.”
Pophal began his career in education in 1983 as a teacher in Waukesha and taught around the state before becoming an assistant principal and athletic director at Sheboygan Falls High School in 1991, and principal at Sheboygan Falls High School in 1995. He also served as principal at Plymouth High School and DC Everest Middle School, where he eventually served in multiple district leadership roles before being hired in Janesville.
Pophal is announcing his retirement eight months in advance in order to give the district time to find a replacement. School board president Cathy Myers says they will begin the process by interviewing and selecting an outside firm to conduct the search.
“Superintendent Pophal has done a tremendous job here in Janesville, and it will be difficult to find a replacement who matches his dedication to our community,” Myers said in a statement. “His work to establish the Janesville Promises has helped the district focus on essential work ensuring that every student is known by name, strength, and need, and that the district continues to serve families with compassion and dedication. His involvement in many civic organizations has helped promote Janesville as a great place for families to live, work, play, and learn.”
Pophal’s last day with the district is expected to be June 30, 2022.
