Janesville police use drone to track down tire slashing suspect

Janesville police are crediting a drone with helping them find a man wanted for damaging more than a dozen vehicle tires.

Police arrested 53-year-old Jerry Van Cannon, of Janesville, Monday night after a short chase. Officers were investigating reports of 13 tires being slashed with a knife in the area of 1008 Bouchard Avenue when one of Van Cannon’s neighbors confronted him about the tire damage. Police say Van Cannon ran away after the confrontation.

Officers found a heat signature along a nearby creek, close to a bicycle trail. They initially couldn’t find Van Cannon due to darkness and thick brush, but were able to use a drone to find him trying to hide by lying in the water.

Van Cannon surrendered to police after being found and is facing charges of disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and bail jumping.
