Janesville man suspected of 8th OWI after brief police chase
29-year-old fled traffic stop, police say
JANESVILLE, Wis. — A Janesville man fled from police in his car Saturday morning after he had been stopped for a suspected traffic violation.
Janesvillle police said Peter Smith, 29, of Janesville, was pulled over at about 1 a.m. Saturday for allegedly failing to stop at a red light. The officer said Smith’s speech was slurred and he smelled like intoxicants. Between the initial stop and the officer approaching Smith’s car a second time with backup, police said Smith sped off in the red Chevrolet Beretta.
Police chased Smith for a third of a mile at speeds of 50 mph until Smith stopped the vehicle on Harding Street just north of Hyatt Street.
Police took Smith into custody on suspicion of fleeing an officer, OWI eighth offense and a probation hold.
Smith’s blood alcohol tested at .15, according to the report.
Smith is in the Rock County Jail.
