Janesville man shooting gun to celebrate new year arrested, police say

A Janesville man who fired a gun to celebrate the New Year early Wednesday was arrested, police said.

The Janesville Police Department said officers responded at 3 a.m. to a report of gunfire heard in the area of West Holmes Street and South Franklin Street.

Police said a nearby resident witnessed someone shooting a handgun from a balcony, and other people in the area reported hearing shots as well.

According to the report, officers found several shell casings in the front yard of a home in the 200 block of South Franklin Street and saw a gun sitting in a vehicle parked in the driveway with what appeared to be a small amount of blood. No one in the residence would answer the door.

Based on the evidence police collected and information from witnesses, officers were able to get a search warrant, and the Janesville and Beloit police SWAT teams helped search the home.

Police said three people were detained. Another handgun was found in the residence and the source of the blood in the vehicle was found not to be associated with the incident.

Police said one of the people detained, 29-year-old Zerrick Hammett, admitted to shooting the gun in celebration of the New Year holiday. No one was injured.

Hammett is being held at the Rock County Jail. He is facing tentative charges of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and possession of firearm by a felon.
